A lot has been said about the internet and its negative effect on the music business as of late. With record companies reporting constantly declining sales, the web has been the main target of the industries anger. But there are certain positives that the web offers that cannot be denied. I would suffice 2 say that the industry is a better place because of the invention of the internet.

Most record companies main concern is that with sites like limewire and the now defunct Napster out there allowing people 2 freely send files of all types across the web, there is no protection for its precious music. These are very real concerns as I have seen the progression of the free music attitude over the last 10 yrs. There are bloggers and web nerds worldwide whose main agenda is to make sure they never have to pay for music. I get links all the time from some of these people with albums that aren’t slated for release for another 2 months. The shady engineers in the studios will make unauthorized mixdowns of the artist albums and email it out 2 a few of his friends, next thing you know in a matter of hours hundreds of thousands of fans worldwide have the album. So yeah there are the negatives of this technology. But as with most things technology related there are positives that can arise from its proper usages.

Although overall sales of physical albums have gone down artist are sellin more singles than ever because of services like itunes and rhapsody. An artist might only sell 150,000 full albums through traditional means but could easily move a million plus singles via the web. So there is some balance in the effect the web has. Some record companies will want to blame their declining sales on the people sharing the album and burning it for their friends for free. In my honest opinion people will buy the full albums, via traditional stores and the web, when companies put out albums worth purchasing. When you look at the caliber of music from the 80’s 90’s til today, there is a smaller percentage of what I call ‘front 2 back albums’ on the market today. Think about it, how many full album projects can u jus put in and ride to without skipping thru tracks. Not many! And this has been proven time and time again. Lil waynes album The Carter 3 sold an unprecedented 1.5 million copies in 1 week. His album did these numbers in spite of the fact that the full album, artwork included, was leaked to the internet 2 and a half weeks earlier. Kanye, Jay Z and other music industry vets do excellent numbers every time they drop and its because they put time effort and quality in their work and don’t just throw something out for the sake of making the release date.

Another more obvious plus of the internet is it allows a platform for the independent artist be seen and shine. Because of the free exchange of files and ideas, the indie is now on a equal playing field with the big dogs. Soulja Boy, Kid Cudi, B.O.B. and countless others are clear examples of what can happen when you properly use the internet to build and maintain a buzz. The web can bridge that physical divide and allow an artist to build a fan base in other countries without leaving the comforts of their own home. Look at Soulja Boy’s original video for his breakout hit Crank That. It was a minute and a half of 3 dudes doing a pre choreographed dance in a bedroom. That’s it! No special lighting, no club scene, no strippers, no expensive bottles of liquor and no making it rain. And based off that internet video countless numbers of fans put their own versions of the dance on youtube making Soulja Boy and instant web phenomenon. His good idea and zero budget ended up earning him a record deal and millions of fans worldwide, all because of the internet. If a 15 year old can figure it out why cant the dinosaurs in the executive offices at theses labels figure out how to use the internet to their advantage. Like I stated earlier as with most things the web can be a blessing and a curse depending on how you use it.

Remember, contrary to popular beliefs it doesn’t take money to make money. Ideas make money. If the independent artist can successfully utilize the web, the world is his for the taking. But it must be a combination of ingenuity and good product. People will not buy into something they don’t believe in especially in tough financial times like these. But give them something to hold on to, and you can have a fan for life.

How to Approach the DJ

One of the most irritating parts of being a DJ for me is artist approaching the booth telling me I NEED 2 play their music. Although I fully realize the need for an artist to get his music on the hands of a DJ factors such as time, place and proper etiquette must be considered in any presentation. The problem with most artist is the only interaction they have with DJs is while we’re working trying to keep 500 on the dance floor. Imagine this: Its 1AM and the club is packed, women everywhere dancing on each other. Bartenders are working super hard to satisfy the thirsty customers yelling for long island teas and apple martinis. The DJ is in a zone playing everything from Gucci to Beyonce and the crowd absolutely loves it. It seems to be a perfect night then up walks YOU! DRUNK AS HELL!! You hand me a CD that was written on with a sharpie and yell in my ear,”Ay mane you NEED 2 put this on! Me and my homeboy just finished mixing this junt tonight! This’ll really get this thang jumping!” Now, just to get you to leave me the hell alone I’ll probably tell you I’m going to check it out which is a blatant lie. Your unprofessional looking, un-cased CD will be sitting in the exact same spot when your drunk ass come back up here 15 minutes later to ask me what I think about it. Sorry but it’s the truth.

I didn’t go through the previous rant to discourage new artist but to do the exact opposite. There is a proper way to give music to a DJ while working. First you need to consider the presentation. If you bring me a CD with your name written on it in marker, I’m going to treat it like what it looks like, trash. With so many printing options available there’s no excuse for this. I know companies that will duplicate and print on your CDs for .50each with minimums and low as 100 pieces. If you live in most major cities there’s a good chance if you add up what you paid to get in the club and what you spent on drinks it would equal well over $50. If you don’t have $50 to invest in yourself, keep your day job. You aren’t built for the music industry.

Alright you got your CDs pressed up and you’re at the club. Now what? When I’m spinning I always get rappers that want to hold conversations with me and tell my how they’re the next Jeezy or the new Hov all while I’m at work controlling the dance floor. Please!! As a DJ, after I start playing any given song I have approx 1 and a half minutes to find another song and get it ready to play. As I stated before, I AM AT Work! Just because you’re off the clock from you job doesn’t mean I am. Keep in mind that the DJs job is to keep party goers at the club, on the floor dancing or at least nodding their heads all night long. We can generally pull this off without outside help especially from you. Bottom line, this club is going to jump without your song and it’s an insult to my craft to suggest otherwise. But it’s still alright to bring me your music. Jus make sure all your contact information is on the CD or stick a card inside of the case, ask me for a business card and keep it moving. With most DJ’s using computer software based setups, its not realistic to think that we will play your song tonight so drop of the CD and back off. Some DJs (especially in strip clubs) have a pay to play system where if you give him $20 or $50 he will play the song. This works differently with EVERY DJ so if you’re going to try the ‘bribe’ approach don’t be insulted or get mad if the DJ shoots you down. Not all DJs are in the position to do this and it’s not worth loosing their steady paying club gig for your $20.

After the club, follow up is key. Give the DJ a few days then email or text him(No, don’t call) to see if he’s had a chance to check out the music you submitted. By the way don’t feel insulted if he hasn’t listened to it yet. We’re very busy people and chances are a bunch of other people have given him CDs to listen to so don’t get mad if he doesn’t instantly remember who you are. Let him know you want his honest opinion on the songs potential. Remember we do this for a living so we know what people want to hear. And don’t get discouraged if he doesn’t like the music. We are also human and have our own individual taste. Good or bad, its just an opinion, not the end of the world. It’s important to keep improving and working the streets in your market. Most hit records, especially in the South, are built up from a strong street buzz throughout the artists’ city, so don’t get stuck going to 1 particular club or DJ every weekend just because they play your song. Every club is a potential avenue for greatness. The DJ is the artist best ally in the music industry since we are the ones that deliver your vision to the consumer, so respect our position and build bridges with us and you will have an upper hand on the competition in your quest for musical success.

Rudy Ray Moore was born in Fort Smith, Arkansas in 1937

Moore began his entertainment career as an R&B singer and continued singing through his comedy career. He developed an interest in comedy in the Army after expanding on a singing performance for other servicemen.

Rudy Ray Moore released many comedy records throughout the 1960s and 1970s, developing a style even more rude and explicit than contemporaries like Redd Foxx and Richard Pryor. This kept him off of television and major films, but cultivated an enduring fan base.

He also guested on Big Daddy Kane's album Taste of Chocolate, released in 1990.

Moore starred in Big Money Hustlas, a movie created by and starring the Insane Clown Posse, in which he played Dolemite for the first time in over 20 years.

He passed away due to complications from diabetes. He Was 81 years old

The veteran funnyman is survived by his daughter, Yvette; sister, Geraldine; brother, Gerald, and his 98-year-old mother, Lucille.

Gucci mane iz ALIVE!

Imprisoned rapper Gucci Mane issued a statement today (October 17),
squashing growing rumors that he was found dead in his Fulton County
jail cell.

Gucci Mane, born Radric Davis, is currently incarcerated for violating
the terms of his probation on a assault charge, on multiple occasions.

Despite attempts by his lawyer to quell the speculation, rumors persist that the rapper overdosed in jail.

Gucci Mane himself issued a statement to AllHipHop.com to prove that he is still alive.

“I am alive and doing well," Gucci Mane said in a statement. “I am in good health and in good spirits. To my friends, fans, and supporters – thank you for your concern and I apologize for the inconvenience of having to deal with these bogus rumors. I promise that I’ll be out before you can bat your eye and that I will be stronger than ever.”

Gucci Mane has suffered numerous legal challenges over the years.

He was involved in a violent feud with Young Jeezy, which ultimately ended up with Gucci Mane being charged with murder in May 2005.

DeKalb County prosecutors accused Gucci Mane of shooting and killing a CTE associate during a botched robbery attempt in which four men burst into an apartment with guns drawn.

Prosecutors dropped the charges against Gucci Mane in December of 2005 after insufficient evidence and a witness corroborated his claim of self-defense.

He has been involved in a number of incidents since, including assaulting a promoter with pool stick, as well as weapons and DUI charges.

Gucci Mane's probation was revoked in September and a judge ordered hi to serve the remainder of the time in prison, after the rapper only completed 25 of his mandatory 600 hours of community service.

Despite these challenges, Gucci Mane's manager Debra Antney, also President of Mizay Entertainment, believes her client will prevail.

“The streets did not break or kill him and neither will prison," Antney said. "Gucci is a brilliant rapper/poet and this time away will only make his music more real and enlightening. He is writing and composing from his cell and will come home with fresh and hot new lyrics.”

Check this out people. I voted last week and it felt great. I really went there 2 change the address on my voter registration, but I asked somebody that was leavin how long he was in line. He said 30 min so i said fuk it and got in the line and was in and out in 35min flat. As i 've told millions of people on my blog b4, in the 04 election I stood in line for 3 and a half hours and Bush punk ass still ended up in office. I know alot more people are gonna vote this year primarily cause we got a black guy running. The people 4 him are gonna vote to assure that he gets in office, while the racist are gonna come out in record numbers to make sure 'this black guy' doesn't get in office(i kno its sad but tru). So im askin erbody to get out and early vote if u can but if u cant, get your ass to the polls on Nov 4th. I voted 4 Obama 1) for the historical significance of havin an intelligent brother I believe in occuping the office and 2)bcause McCain an palin are 2 of the dumbest MFs I have ever heard of. Not to mention that john mccain voted, more than once, against makin Martin Luther Kings birthday a holiday. That why Arizona was the last state to recognize it as a federal holiday.
